This is a splendid horizontal poster for Cannes, the Cote D’Azur town now home to the famous film festival and its celebrity infused night-life. In the Thirties, summers on the Riviera had become as popular as the winter season and Cannes actively sought to attract a well-heeled clientele to its casino, elegant boardwalks and stunning setting.
This tranquil poster is one of 3 travel images which SEM created to promote Cannes in 1930. SEM had become famous for his witty caricatures and scenes of Paris life in the Gay Nineties. He continued to make fine posters during WWI and the Inter-War years.
