George Taboureau, better known as Sandy Hook, specialized in ship posters, creating some of the finest designs of the genre in the '20s and '30s. This elegant poster for the French Line Chargeurs Reunis is one of his most evocative, showing a stylish couple enjoying high style on a voyage between France and South America (specifically Brazil and the Rio de la Plata, the estuary separating Argentina and Uruguay.) By the 1920s, Argentina was the seventh richest country in the world, with a vast railroad system and a wealth of natural resources. Buenos Aires, the home of the Tango craze that spread to Paris in the Twenties, enjoyed strong growth in tourism and immigration through the decade.
