This striking design for a German auto supplier promotes a technological breakthrough - crankless starters. A 1912 article in the NY Times states that there are moments, such as when your car stalls on a railroad crossing, where these are more than a luxury. Not surprisingly, their use spread rapidly.

This design, so clear, direct and handsome, is everything that the German Plakatstil, or Poster Style, brought to the advertising world. Jacoby-Boy worked for Hollerbaum and Schmidt, the printer that pioneered modernist design in Germany, superceding Art Nouveau and its flowery style.
