For over 50 years, the Zurich clothing manufacturer and retailer, PKZ, sought out different styles and artists to interpret the "PKZ Man" for different seasons and settings. What resulted was an outstanding series of startling freshness which generated terrific brand awareness among the public for decades. The PKZ poster series is perhaps the most famous of all time, and PKZ is still a prominent retailer in Switzerland today.
Arnhold's PKZ Man is all business. His impeccable stylishness is accompanied by a sense of purpose and authority which by comparison is hardly revealed in the other 103 PKZ posters in the 1908 to 1960 series. The rich earth tones add to the regal feeling of Arnhold's portrait, and its very sobriety would have made this poster stand out all the more in the Roaring '20s.
Arnhold was born in Austria and worked in Basel and Zurich before moving to Vienna in 1935. In 1955 he moved to New York. His PKZ poster is one of the rarer and most famous in the series.
