Few artists in the long history of the poster had more talent or versatility than Zurich's Otto Baumberger. Beginning in 1911, he paved the way for Swiss Object, Design, and Travel posters, the primary idioms of the remarkable rise of Swiss graphic design in the 20th Century.
Baumberger's travel posters were generally more traditional and representative than his other posters, and this is the case with his superb design for the Sailing School on the Lake of Thon in the Bernese Oberland. Two sailboats sweep downwind under crystal clear blue skies. Printed beautifully by Fretz, the poster's colors are remarkably deep and rich.
