CinemAfrica 2004, 2004
A bold, striking poster by Swiss graphic designer Ralph Schraivogel (b. 1960) for Cinemafrica in 2004, the biannual African film festival that took place at the Filmpodium in Zurich from 1987 to 2006. Cinemafrica was founded to spread appreciation and knowledge of African cinema throughout Europe, after the first ever film from the African continent was shown at Cannes Film Festival in 1987. Schraivogel uses a zebra stripe print as a base for each poster in the series, superimposing the typeface on manipulated film stills to create a layered, dynamic design. In excellent condition. Schraivogel is considered by many the best poster-maker in Switzerland since the 1990s. His work is remarkable for its multi-layered patterning (which is created without computers!) and is reminiscent of Herbert Matter and Wolfgang Weingart in its playfulness and brilliant design solutions. Schraivogel’s work is represented in the Museum of Modern Art and other important design collections.
