David Klein created some of the most playfully hip travel posters of the postwar era. A California scene painter, he became a major success on Madison Avenue in the Fifties into the Sixties. His poster series for TWA, which continued for more than a decade, created a hugely successful brand image for the airline as low cost fares made air travel a mass market.
Klein’s spectacular TWA poster for Africa features a herd of zebras in a nearly psychedelic explosion of colors. Indeed, by this time, TWA’s brand was so recognizable that there is no airplane in the poster – something that was unimaginable up til that era.
