The Leviathan began life as a German ship, Hamburg-Amerika's SS Vaterland in 1914. The largest ship in the world at the time, the Vaterland was trapped in New York harbor at the outbreak of WWI and was confiscated and dubbed Leviathan by the US in 1917 when the country joined the Allies.

After being converted from a troop ship, Leviathan became America's most popular super liner in the early Twenties - this despite the the disadvantage of not being able to serve alcohol like liners from other countries.
