Holland-Amerika Line, 1936

ten Broek, Willem F. poster: Holland-Amerika Line

Ten Broek's soaring prow of the Niuew Amsterdam is one of the most successful Art Deco ocean liner posters. Clearly influenced by A. M. Cassandre's Normandie and L'Atlantique posters, Ten Broek's Machine Age solution is dramatic and streamlined, emphasizing the ship's speed as she cuts across the wake of a seemingly tiny sailboat. The Nieuw Amsterdam became a worthy Dutch competitor in a field of state of the art ships like the Normandie, Queen Mary, Bremen and Europa.
