L'Oie d'Or, 1928

Cappiello, Leonetto poster: L'Oie d'Or

The dawn of the 20th century saw a host of new products and manufacturing sophistication. In 1900, the young poster artist Leonetto Cappiello would pioneer a new style that would make hundreds of these products well known and unforgettable through humor, bright color and wild metaphors. Cappiello's style would be mimicked and modified by countless artists over the decades but never surpassed.

One of Cappiello's most outrageously playful posters is for a brand of foie gras from 1928. In it, we see a Queen goose bowing to another Queen (La Reine des Cremes) whose crown sits on an open tin of goose liver. Crazy!
