Grece - Mont Athos, 1949

Illegible poster: Grece - Mont Athos

This stunning image was one of a fine group of posters created in the late Forties by the Greek government to jump-start tourism after WWII and the Greek Civil War. The campaign coincides with the birth of Hellenic Airlines, which offered airline service from Western Europe.

This monastery, located on a peninsula in Northeast Greece, is the dramatic setting for what is considered the center of Eastern Orthodox monasticism.
