In this late work, Cassandre created a dreamlike vision of a gondolier silently navigating a Venetian canal in the light of early dawn or dusk. Adopting the language of De Chirico, the Italian metaphysical surrealist painter, Cassandre expresses the timeless and unique character of the city. It is unlike any tourist poster of Venice and must have been somewhat of a sensation when it appeared in 1956.
