Ici Blackerisation Deckerisation - Black & Decker, 1930

Bernard, Francis poster: Ici Blackerisation Deckerisation - Black & Decker

Francis Bernard, one of the top five Parisian Art Deco posters artists between the wars but the least well-known, created this ingenious design for Black & Decker spray and polishing equipment. The beautiful airbrushing, the dramatic composition with car tipped down and the robotic worker (complete with safety glasses) stable and in control, all make it clear that B & D makes the job easy, safe and beautiful.

What could have been confusing and ugly is as clear and attractive as a message could be. Bernard's playful robotic figures were used with much success, and would be the foundation of many of his best designs.
