Feba - Encre Suisse (French Text), 1941
Peter Birkhauser's breathtaking Object Poster for a leading brand of ink is certainly one of the masterpieces of poster art. Everything about this design reflects precision and elegance, from the gleaming metal tip of the fountain pen to the tromp l'oeil effect of the reflection on the pen body, the flowing script, the beautifully articulated shadows, the dynamic diagonal composition, and its subtle coloring.
The Swiss Object Poster Style seen here sought to create unforgettable icons out of everyday products through breathtaking graphics and printing. No one artist was more accomplished in this style than Birkhauser, who created more than 50 Object Poster masterpieces during the Thirties, Forties, and early Fifties.
This poster was a Swiss Poster of the Year award winner in 1941, the competition's inaugural year. It is in several museums, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
