Alley cat with halo on wall; red, black, white

Chat Noir/Prochainement, 1896
This is the rarest small-format variant of Steinlen's poster for Rudolphe Salis' famous cabaret, Le Chat Noir. Originally executed in 1896 to announce the reopening of the saucy Parisian nightclub, Steinlen's poster showed an alley cat incongruously crowned by a halo. Inscribed "Mon Joye Montmartre," the halo was a sarcastic dig at the artist's rival, Alphonse Mucha, who surrounded the flowing locks of his ethereal beauties with a Madonna's halo. The poster became one of the icons of the Belle Epoque and one of the classics of all poster art. In fine condition with rich color. A gem!
