Fete Federale de Chant, 1935
Birkhauser’s poster for a music festival is one of the most surrealistic of the Object Poster style. As Robert Brown has observed, the poster’s trompe-l’oeil effect is so powerful that the viewer feels that he is about to be swallowed alive. Fete Federale shows the strong influence of Birkhauser’s teacher, Niklaus Stoecklin, who was the father of the Basel Object Poster group, whom often were called “Magic Realists.” The appropriateness of the term is clear in this poster, where Birkhauser has gone beyond super real to surreal. A tour de force!
