Tribute To the Music Of Thelonious Monk, 1986
A vibrant poster by the celebrated Swiss designer Niklaus Troxler, which pays tribute to Thelonious Monk and was produced for the 1986 Willisau Jazz Festival. The event was conceived and organized by Troxler, a gifted musician himself. From 1975 to 2009, Troxler created two or more posters a year for the festival, and the posters have become as legendary as the music they promote. Troxler was awarded with Swiss Poster of the Year for this clever design. Rejecting the humorless and rigid International Typographic Style which dominated Swiss design, Troxler instead reveled in visual puns and bold images, reminiscent of the work of Milton Glaser in the U.S. This so-called Post-Modern Style brought spontaneity and surprise into the forefront of Swiss design. A beautifully produced silkscreen in excellent condition.
