Ballett - Opernhaus Zurich,
1975
This highly expressive typographic poster was created in 1975 for a ballet performance at the Opernhaus Zurich. The thin, angular lettering of “ballett” is broken up with the bold “E” of the title leaping upward in a playful allusion to the movement and rhythms of dance.
Ruedi Rüegg received the Swiss Poster of the Year Award for this design, which bridges the gap between the rigorous typographic style of his mentor, Josef Mueller-Brockmann, and Post-Modernist experimentation.
Rüegg studied design in Zurich under Mueller-Brockmann, worked as managing director of the Mueller-Brockmann & Co agency, and collaborated with other eminent designers including Paul Rand in the 1960s. Rüegg had a long and successful career as a designer, educator, and writer, and co-founded the agency Baltis and Ruegg in 1977, which later became Designalltag.
