Bible Marc Chagall - Verve,
1956
In 1956, Marc Chagall completed one of his most important life works, a series of 105 etchings of the Old Testament. The project began in 1930 when Chagall was commissioned by legendary French art dealer Ambroise Vollard; it led to two months of travel to Palestine and then 4 years of obsessive work on the series back in France and in Holland. Interrupted by Vollard's death in 1939 and WWII, Chagall finally completed the series in 1956.
Chagall wrote: "Ever since early childhood, I have been captivated by the Bible. It has always seemed to me and still seems today the greatest source of poetry of all time."
This stunning original lithograph of Moses with the tablets of the Bible promoted a special edition that deluxe art review Verve devoted to the etchings.
