Ski Dartmouth Skiway, 1957 ca.
John Scotford was a gifted student artist at Dartmouth and in 1940 created one of the finest Dartmouth Winter Carnival posters. He went on to become the head of design at Dartmouth and led a successful graphic design career. His delightful Mid-Century Modern Dartmouth Skiway is one of the most proficient and eye-catching stylized ski posters of the era. In 1969 when Dartmouth celebrated its 200th anniversary, Scotford created a Lone Pine bicentennial symbol that began the institution’s move away from the Indian mascot and imagery, officially retired by the trustees in 1974.
