Bell (carving board), 1939
Leupin's first triumph as a poster artist occurred shortly after returning from Paris, where he studied with Paul Colin, the renowned Art Deco master who discovered Josephine Baker. His 1939 commission for Bell fine Swiss charcuterie showed a trompe-l'oeil wooden carving board loaded with appetizing meats. For a garnish, Leupin added a pickle to the assemblage, and for memorability added the company's logo into the handle of the board. Leupin was surprised to find the poster caused a sensation. So strong was the response that the butcher was compelled to have branded carving boards manufactured to fulfill the demand.
