Charlie Chaplin - Goldrausch (Hand-Signed),
1960 ca.
A terrific poster by Gunter Rambow for the c.1960 German rerelease of the silent Charlie Chaplin comedy "The Gold Rush." Chaplin is depicted in an animated pose as his iconic character of the Little Tramp.
Rambow (b. 1938) grew up in the German Democratic Republic and trained in West Germany at the Academy of Art and Design in Kassel. He reached maturity as a designer in the late 1960s, a period in which poster design shifted from Mid-Century Modernism and became increasingly political and personal. His posters are visceral, trimmed down to the essentials, and hard headed, no matter whether they incorporated minimalist graphics or photography and montage in provocative and surrealistic compositions.
Rambow remained one of Germany’s leading graphic designers, producing renowned poster series for cultural and corporate clients including the Hessisches Staatstheater in Wiesbaden, Oper Frankfurt (Frankfurt Opera), and the publishing house S. Fischer Verlag. His posters are held in the collections of the Library of Congress, the Stedelijk Museum, and the Museum of Modern Art, New York, among other institutions.
