Fabbria Di Automobili - SAFIR, 1907 ca.
In 1907, automobiles and automobile advertising were in their infancy. SAFIR, the acronym for Swiss Automobile Factory, was one of the first car companies in Switzerland, starting production in 1906. Although it only remained in production til 1909, it is survived by this unique, dark Symbolist poster by Swiss master Burkhard Mangold. We see a naked woman driver speeding down a winding road with a gigantic naked man stuffed into the back seat. As Jack Rennert has so aptly written, it "brilliantly exemplified the dark fantasies of power, speed, and sexuality so often associated with the car industry." Rare!
