Waiter carries tray with Picon while spraying seltzer into glass; orange, black

L'Aperitif Amer Picon, 1930 ca.
This delightful poster for a popular aperitif captures the energy of a French bistro - a waiter puts on the brakes as he spritzes a Picon with its requisite seltzer before speeding off to a waiting customer. The color scheme references that Amer Picon is a bitter orange liqueur. The poster was designed by leading Art Deco poster artist Sepo, who was classically trained in Bologna and left for Paris in 1920 to further his advertising career. He quickly became a success known for modernizing the look of product posters a step beyond the caricature-based style of Leonetto Cappiello. Amer Picon is one of his finest and most playful designs.
