Monte Carlo (from Ricordi portfolio), 1914 ca.
This is a selection from a rare commemorative portfolio published by Ricordi around World War I. The set consisted of 70 small lithographic plates of Ricordi's greatest posters printed between 1895 and 1914. In the 1870s, Ricordi opened an in-house lithography shop to promote its operas and sheet music business. By 1895, Ricordi became the leading lithographer in Italy and under the artistic leadership of Adolfo Hohenstein brought Italian Art Nouveau to a world class level. He himself created many masterpieces, including Tosca, Madama Butterfly and Corriere della Sera, in addition to this distinguished poster for a pigeon shoot competition in Monte Carlo.
