Re Lachende Javaan,

This unique poster was created by Escher to promote a landmark Indonesian restaurant in the Dutch city of Haarlem. The semi-abstract design suggests a vibrant, tropical scene of a hammock swaying between palm trees.
Escher started collecting posters at the age of 6, and was passionate about artists as diverse as Hohlwein, Bernhard, Leupin and Savignac. One can't help but think that the poster forms a giant smile, a playful nod to the latter two artists. The jaunty hand drawn quality of the lettering befits the informal, fun restaurant it was created for.
